I dragged him away from the doorway.

I heard Black Sally say, “I just need to run out to the car for minute!” Then a man’s voice, “Nah! You ain’t going nowhere bitch!” That was followed by sounds of a struggle. Gunfire erupted somewhere upstairs. I followed the Gothic Girl as she crouched and ran down the hall. When we got to the spot where the hall opened into the living room, we saw Sally trading blows with one of the men. The other man in the room had Isabel on the floor. He was stabbing her with a long kitchen knife. The Gothic Girl fired three shots at his head. He fell to his side twitching. Blood and brains were splattered on the wall behind him.

Black Sally pulled a knife and shoved it up into the soft flesh between the man’s neck and chin. She pulled it out, then she plunged the knife into his side and pulled it across his body, slicing open his abdomen. The man dropped to his knees, blood poured from his mouth. Isabel wasn’t moving. She was losing a lot of blood from wounds in her neck and chest. Lavinia’s voice said, “There is still one upstairs. Put your pistol in your pants, take your boots off, grab that old hunting rifle from the corner and go up the stairs.” When I got to the top of stairs she said, “Walk straight ahead. Stop just to the right of that picture on the wall. Face the picture, crouch down and point your rifle at the wall. Right there. You will have to fire immediately after putting a bullet in the chamber. Do it now!” I chambered a round and fired. Something heavy hit the floor on the other side of the wall. Lavinia’s voice said, “Get in there. He’s still alive. Smash his head in with the butt of your rifle.”

When I got back downstairs, blood and brain matter speckled my face. Black Sally and the Gothic Girl were carrying Isabel to the door. I dropped the rifle and rushed to help them. We got outside and saw the van. The bullet-riddled white van looked a chunk of Swiss cheese. Lavinia’s voice said, “Get the keys to the Caprice, they’re on a shelf by the door. Hurry up.” I went back inside, found the keys and ran to the white Caprice. I heard sirens in the distance. By the time I found the key and started the car, the Gothic Girl was in the passenger seat and Sally was in the back with Isabel. We backed out of the driveway and escaped into the night.
